Why are mothers so paranoid these days and so rigid with rules on raising kids?

I have 8 kids aged 26, 23, 20, 19, 16, 13, 10 and 10.
I think having babies and raising kids was so much easier then because nowadays it seems like there are so many “rules” and “regulations” that people seem to stick to so rigidly.

- don’t feed a baby any solids under 6 months.
- never let a baby sleep on their stomach.
- never use bumpers or quilts on a cot.
- don’t bath your baby every day.
- don’t take your child out of the house for 6 weeks.

Parenting now is just ridiculous.

My kids all slept on their stomachs, everyone was fed rice cereal from the age of 6 weeks, all babies were taken out in their prams from the day they came from hospital and everyone used bumpers and quilts on their cots.

Parenting today seems more of a chore than a “delight”. More people need to listen to their own natural instincts rather than rigidly follow their baby books and obsess over every little thing they do.

I agree with you,and I have a daughter that’s only six years old,and a baby of twelve weeks. I agree because my daughter started solids early,it’s the only way she was satisfied. Follow your parenting instinct,and don’t try to “textbook raise” your baby. All that SIDS is is when an infant passes away and they’re unsure of what causes it. So what “could cause” SIDS is just speculation on how they think these babies pass away. Many many doctors have said this. I agree. My daughter slept on her stomach,my son just doesn’t want to. I agree with you,it seems as if they are trying to find “a golden age” at which ALL babies should do these things,and there is no “golden age”,when your baby is ready to have something/do something,they will let you know. I agree,too many people make it seem more like a choce than what it is-one of the greatest times in your life.
