Questions about end of pregnancy and home birth?
This is our first baby, and my hubby and I just re-located and bought brand new furniture. I plan on having a home birth with a midwife. But I’m a little worried over some things. How can I protect my furniture, in case my water breaks? I’m not worried about the bed, I have a waterproof mattress pad. But can I buy something to put on my couch? Will the fluid stain carpet? And I plan on having a water birth. How soon after you have the baby does the placenta come out? Will I get out of the tub to deliver the placenta? And are there special pads or anything for the bleeding afterwards?
I’ll ask the midwife about all of this for sure, but just wanted your opinions and thoughts. Thanks!
It is quite rare for your waters to come out with a gush and even more so if you are lying down on the couch. More so womens water will trickle or sometimes break when going to the toilet because theres more pressure when going to the loo. I would say to be overly cautious to just put a few towels on the couch. With the carpet i doubt it will stain because its clear fluid but after time it may not have a nice smell so maybe for some odd reason that you do get fluid on the carpet just dilute it for the mean time with a cup of water and then after bubs use a home carper tcleaning spray or get them professionally done but as i said its very un-likley. Most womens waters will stay intact until you’re nearly dilated or during pushing.
Seeming you are having a homebirth and won’t be having the needle after birth to help expel the placenta quickly which is usually a good thing so most of the time it can depend but anything from about 15min- an hour or two, you may get out of the tub if you wish it’s entirly up to you but most likley you will be cuddling and feeding your baby in the tub for a while. Make sure you aren’t too hot or cold and you are upright after the birth, this will help expel the placenta–as well as breastfeeding.
Yes there are special pads to wear after the birth, you can find them in your usual supermarket and are will all the other pads usually and are just called maternity pads. I prefer the ones with wings and go for the bulky ones too as they give more comfort so don’t think that the thin ones are going to be better.
If you are interested there is an amasing book you may be interesed in, the author is the founder of a midwifery centre in America where they have an amazing rate for successful no intervention births and the book she had written is absolutley amasing and is sure to help you get into the mind set for birth and give you a few tips on how to deal with certain things. It’s called “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth”
