Was it hard at first leaving your baby at nursery?

Hello all. I am due in 6 weeks time and i start my maternity leave in 2 weeks. I plan to go back to work when my baby is 7 months, i know for some of you it seems too early but it’s ok with me. What i want to know is was it hard for you at first when you put your baby in nursery or when you left them with someone for the first time. Did they cry, how long did it take them to get used to it, did you feel guilty. All ideas are welcome from anyone who knows one or two things about babies

It was very hard, and i did feel like i was abandoning them. My twin boys were 2 months old at the time. They’re now 6 months old. It was only a slight comfort that i work at the hospital the boys creche is based at, so i’m close by if they need me. The first week they started, i used to drop them off extra early so i could stay with them for an hour or so and settle them in. They did cry when i left, and i had to stop myself turning back, grabbing them and racing out the door. But i did persevere, and apparently they settled down relatively quickly after i’d gone. They seemed used to it after the first month, and now when i drop them off before my shift, they don’t even notice i’ve gone which is mightily insulting..

Does your child ever refuse to sleep?

Well not so much refuse, but like for instance – this morning my daughter got up at 3:30 a.m. and came to my room telling me her bed was cold could she sleep in mine? So I let her, then at 4 my husband took her back to bed. Then at 6:30 she was up again and stayed up the rest of the day. She didnt have a nap yesterday either so I know she was so exhausted. She had dark circles under her eyes all day. Does your child ever do this or have they ever? She has a couple times before, but she was like that as a baby as well… hated to sleep and screamed from the time she was tired til she couldnt fight it anymore.

My middle son use to do this all the time. He wanted attention and being able to sleep in our bed alone with us gave him the attention he wanted. I also noticed that he was getting up earlier so we started putting him to bed a little later and not allowing him to nap during the day.

This is what i would do:
1. Make sure she is warm and comfortable in bed: enough blankets, pillows etc
2. Get her a nightlight, if she doesn’t already have one, or maybe a lava lap/one of those spinning light things. Sometimes when kids wake up in the middle of the night in the dark, they get afraid. Having a light or something distracting would help. Also music.
3. Try putting her to bed about 30mins later than you are now. Bring her upstairs, read/relax with her for an extra 30 minutes and then shut the lights off.
4. When she comes into your room and then falls asleep, bring her back into her room.
5. Make sure she’s awake for the last 6hrs before she goes to sleep. So if she naps during the day and goes to bed at 8pm, she should be done with her nap by 2pm. Keep her naps to 20-30mins long.
6. Make sure she doesn’t go to bed on an empty stomach.
